The site for the bus depot is being cleared and this involves removing asbestos. This website has reported the works to date and interaction with council officers and the contractor.
The work site has also been monitoried by the CFMEU, (the construction union) who have done several spot inspections, over the last few weeks, to check on the work processes and safety issues. Workplace Helath and Safety (Qld) has also been to the site to inspect the work practices.
On today's visit, the union officials found a breach of the regulations in handling asbestos. The waste material is supposed to be wrapped in plastic and contained in a bin. The union officials found lose asbestos sitting on top of the plastic and not wrapped as required. The union officials asked the contractor the rectify the problem and he did.
While alot of work has been done, the contractor still needs to follow the regulations to the very end and not take shortcuts. Everyones health and safety depends on it.
